RICHMOND, Va. – The Hampton University football team fell on the road on Saturday in yet another tough contest, as No. 18/21 Richmond came away with a 42-17 win at Robins Stadium.
"I said after last week's game (against William and Mary) that this might be the best team we play all year," first-year head coach
Connell Maynor said. "They proved just that … we struggled offensively, we struggled defensively."
The Pirates (0-3) were held to 281 yards of total offense, and junior quarterback
Jaylian Williamson (Chesapeake, Va.) was held to just 88 yards passing, completing 13 of his 23 throws. Sophomore quarterback
Bryan Bailey (Woodruff, S.C.) was 6-for-10 for 47 yards.
Junior wideout
Rayshad Riddick (Portsmouth, Va.) led the Pirates with 54 receiving yards on six catches, while redshirt sophomore wideout
Rashawn Proctor (Hampton, Va.) had 36 receiving yards, also on six catches.
Junior linebacker
Tyrone Ward (Oakland, Calif.) led the defense with 13 tackles, while freshman defensive back
Chaka Diarrassouba (Atlanta, Ga.) added 10 stops.
Richmond scored twice in the first quarter, on a 4-yard run from Jacobi Green and an 8-yard touchdown pass from Michael Strauss to T.J. Moon to give the Spiders a 14-0 lead.
The Pirates answered on the ensuing possession, going 79 yards on 10 plays before Williamson hit Proctor from 13 yards out to cut the lead to 14-7.
It was the third straight game in which Williamson threw a touchdown pass.
Richmond (2-1) answered on its next possession, as Strauss connected with Hunter Westfall for a 6-yard pass at the 9:56 mark of the second quarter to cap off a 9-play, 66-yard drive and give the Spiders a 21-7 lead.
The Pirates went 38 yards in nine plays later in the quarter, setting up a 26-yard field goal from sophomore
Anthony Prevost (Chesterfield, Va.) at the 4:27 mark to cut the lead to 21-10.
It was Prevost's first field goal of the season.
The Pirates had possession to open the third quarter, trailing 21-10, but couldn't get anything going offensively. Richmond took over, and on the next play, Green ran 50 yards for the touchdown to give the Spiders a 28-10 lead.
Richmond scored again with 1:44 left in the third quarter, capping off a 12-play, 85-yard drive with a 5-yard pass from Strauss to Sean Fitzpatrick to put the Spiders up 35-10.
Michael Rocco added a 9-yard touchdown run with 4:42 left in the game to put Richmond up 42-10.
The Pirates put together a 6-play, 72-yard drive late in the fourth quarter, finding the endzone on a 12-yard run from freshman running back
Eric Carter Jr. (Fayetteville, N.C.) with 2:06 left.
"We've gotta get our program to where (Richmond is)," Maynor said, "That's what we strive for."
