LADY PIRATES DROP SEASON OPENER AT IOWA STATE

AMES, Iowa – The Hampton University women's basketball team opened the 2015-16 season on Friday evening with a 95-59 loss to Iowa State in the Hilton Coliseum.
 
Junior guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas, the preseason MEAC Player of the Year, led the Lady Pirates (0-1) with 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting. She had five of Hampton's eight 3-pointers, going 5-for-7 from behind the arc.
 
Tate-DeFreitas has 32 career 20-point games.
 
Senior guard Areana Davis added 12 points, a career high, on 5-for-9 shooting. On top of setting new career highs in field goals made and attempted, Davis also led the Lady Pirates with four rebounds.
 
Chanel Green dished out five assists.
 
The Lady Pirates shot 36.9 percent (24-for-65) from the floor and made eight of 25 3-pointers (32.0 percent). Hampton was 12-for-31 (38.7 percent) from the floor in the first quarter.
 
The Lady Pirates led for much of the first quarter, going up 6-2 in the opening minutes after jumpers from senior guard Kristine Rose and sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe. The Cyclones took a 9-8 lead at the 4:35 mark of the quarter, but a 6-2 Hampton spurt gave the Lady Pirates a 14-11 lead after Tate-DeFreitas hit her first trey of the night.
 
Another three from Tate-DeFreitas at the 1:53 mark gave Hampton a 17-13 lead, its largest of the game.
 
But Iowa State closed the quarter on a 5-0 run to take an 18-17 lead after Seanna Johnson's 3-point play.
 
Tate-DeFreitas gave Hampton the lead again with 7:57 left in the second quarter, hitting a jumper that put the Lady Pirates on top 21-20. But the Cyclones answered with a 10-0 run that gave them a 30-21 lead with 5:40 left in the half.
 
A jumper from Davis at the 2:05 mark cut the lead to 39-29, before Iowa State scored the next eight points to open up a 47-29 lead after a 3-pointer from Bridget Carleton with 59 seconds left in the half.
 
Iowa State, which hit seven 3-pointers in the second quarter, held that lead at the half.
 
A jumper from Rose with 6:57 left in the third quarter cut Iowa State's lead to 54-41, before the Cyclones went on a 12-0 run to take a 66-41 lead after Bryanna Fernstrom hit a jumper.
 
A Bridget 3-pointer with 48 seconds left gave Iowa State a 77-45 lead after three quarters.
 
The Cyclones shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) in the third quarter, before hitting seven of 11 shots for a 63.6-percent clip in the fourth quarter.
 
Iowa State (1-0) shot 56.7 percent (34-for-60) from the floor and made 12 of its 24 3-pointers.
 
The Cyclones also held a 45-28 edge in rebounding.
 
Bridget had 28 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Cyclones, while Johnson added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Four Cyclones wound up in double figures.
