LADY PIRATES HANDLE MORGAN STATE ON ROAD

BALTIMORE, Md. – Four players scored in double figures Monday evening at the Hill Field House, as the Hampton University women's basketball team upended Morgan State 78-44 for its third straight win.
 
The Lady Pirates improved to 13-11 overall and 9-2 in MEAC play.
 
Sophomore guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas (Harrisburg, Pa.) scored a game-high 24 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Senior guard Kenia Cole (Silver Spring, Md.) added 15 points, hitting three 3-pointers, while senior guard Kyani White (Manassas, Va.) and junior guard Areana Davis (Virginia Beach, Va.) each added 10 points.
 
Redshirt junior forward Brielle Ward (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed a team-high 15 rebounds.
 
The Lady Pirates shot 40.9 percent (27-for-66) from the floor and hit nine of 17 3-pointers (52.9 percent). Hampton also turned 21 Morgan State turnovers into 30 points, and the Lady Pirates out-rebounded the Bears 47-41.
 
Morgan State held an early 7-4 lead, and the Bears later cut Hampton's lead to 14-12 at the 14:14 mark of the first half after a 3-pointer from Braennan Farrar, but the Lady Pirates responded by scoring the next eight points, going up 22-12 at the 11:13 mark on a layup from Davis.
 
Overall, the Lady Pirates went on a 17-2 run, taking a 31-14 lead after a layup from Cole with 7:39 left in the half.
 
Hampton led 43-25 at the half.
 
Tate-DeFreitas led the Lady Pirates with 15 points at the break.
 
A layup from Farrar with 15:35 left in the second half cut Hampton's lead to 55-33, but that was Morgan State's last field goal until the 2:10 mark, when Lindsay Williams hit a 3-pointer.
 
Over that span, the Lady Pirates went on a 20-5 run, taking a 75-38 lead with 2:42 left to play following a layup from freshman forward Mikayla Sayle (Hampton, Va.).
 
The Bears shot just 24.0 percent (6-for-25) from the floor in the second half, going 1-for-6 from behind the arc. Morgan State had 11 turnovers in the second half alone, and during that long scoring drought, Morgan State only managed five points at the free throw line.
 
Morgan State (9-16, 6-6 MEAC) shot just 20.8 percent (11-for-53) from the floor and went just 3-for-18 (16.7 percent) from behind the arc.
 
Tykyrah Williams led Morgan State with 12 points.
