WASHINGTON, D.C. – Quinton Chevous' driving layup with seven seconds left gave the Hampton University men's basketball team a 68-67 comeback win over rival Howard Saturday evening at the Burr Gymnasium.
The Pirates improved to 12-15 overall and 8-6 in MEAC play.
Junior guard
Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Pirates with 23 points on 8-for-13 shooting, hitting four 3-pointers, while Chievous (Chicago, Ill.) had 11 points and tied for the team high with 10 rebounds.
Redshirt junior forward
Dwight Meikle (Baltimore, Md.) also had 10 boards.
The Pirates shot 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the floor and hit eight of 21 3-pointers (38.1 percent). Hampton also held a 38-36 edge on the glass.
Howard led 67-61 with 40 seconds left to play, but a jumper from Powers seven seconds later cut the lead to 67-63. James Miller then missed both free throws, before Powers hit a 3-pointer with 18 seconds left to cut the lead to 67-66.
James Carlton missed both of his free throws, giving the Pirates the ball in the closing seconds. Chievous took the feed in the paint, kissed the ball off the glass, and drew contact. Though he missed the free throws, Chievous' layup gave the Pirates a 68-67 lead.
James Daniels' 3-pointer from the top of the key fell wide at the buzzer.
The Pirates jumped out to an 8-2 lead to open the game, taking that lead on a trey from junior guard
Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.) with 18:04 left in the first half. Howard had cut the lead to 11-8 at the 15:41 mark, but Hampton went on an 8-2 run to take a 19-10 lead at the 13:30 mark after a trey from junior guard
Reginald Johnson (Chicago, Ill.).
Another Johnson trey at the 8:45 mark put Hampton up 29-19.
The Pirates maintained control throughout the remainder of the first half, and Hampton went into the locker room with a 40-33 lead.
Powers had 13 points at the break.
Howard opened the second half with an 18-10 run, taking its first lead of the night, 51-50, with 12:03 left. Powers gave the lead back to the Pirates with a trey on the following possession, giving Hampton a 53-51 lead.
Hampton led 54-51 with 11:10 to play, before Howard went on an 8-0 run to take a 59-54 lead with 7:14 left to play after a pair of free throws from Carlton. Jared Norsworthy hit a 3-pointer with 3:25 left to play, giving Howard a 64-58 lead.
Norsworthy's free throw with 40 seconds left put Howard up 67-61.
Howard (15-14, 9-6 MEAC) shot 40.0 percent (22-for-55) from the floor, but hit just three of 16 3-pointers.
Daniel led the Bison with 20 points.
