DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University women's golf team opened its spring slate by winning the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational hosted by Bethune-Cookman on Friday and Saturday at the LPGA International.
The Lady Pirates shot a three-day score of 706, beating Savannah State by 30 strokes.
Junior
Cheryl Chua posted the best individual score, taking the top spot after firing a 22-over 166 (90-76) – and her second-round 76, on top of being the team's lone round in the 70s, was the low round for Hampton on the weekend.
Freshman
Zora Moore shot a 31-over 175 (90-85) to finish third, while senior
Mikea Granberry was fourth after shooting a 34-over 178 (93-85).
Freshman
Britney Smith was sixth with a 43-over 187 (94-93).
On the men's side, though the Pirates didn't record a final team score, junior
Dawson Hobbs came in 66th with a 90-over 306 (105-106-95), while junior
Arthur Davis was 67th after firing a 95-over 311 (106-92-113).
Florida Atlantic won the men's team title with a 902 (304-302-296).
Army's Marcus Plunkett won the men's individual title with a 4-over 220 (73-73-74).
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Jacksonville, Fla. on March 9-12 to compete in both the Benbow Collegiate and the Bulldog Florida Invitational.
