HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team's hot streak continued on Sunday, as the Lady Pirates upended Delaware State 10-1 in five innings at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium to complete the three-game sweep.
The Lady Pirates (11-16, 3-0 MEAC) have won six straight games.
Delaware State held a 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning, before Hampton tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the frame after an RBI single from junior
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) that scored junior
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.).
Hampton then scored four runs in the bottom of the second, starting with an RBI double from sophomore
Danielle Budden (Jackson, N.J.). Budden later scored when Ponds reached on an error, before McCoy and freshman
Allyson Babinsack (Hampton, Va.) each had RBI doubles to put Hampton up 5-1.
The Lady Pirates then broke the game wide open in the bottom of the third, pushing across five runs.
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) got the scoring in the inning started with an RBI single up the middle that scored sophomore
Taylor Clark (Queen Creek, Ariz.). McCoy followed with a two-run single, before freshman
Jada Fields (Woodland Park, N.J.) singled in two more runs to give Hampton a 10-1 lead.
McCoy was 3-for-3 at the plate, driving in a team-high four runs.
Babinsack struck out five and gave up four hits in four innings of work to pick up her eighth win of the season – and her fifth straight.
