TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Hampton University women's golf team won the Florida A&M Spring Invitational, which was held on Saturday and Sunday at the Southwood Golf Club, led by junior
Cheryl Chua.
The Lady Pirates had a two-day score of 648 (326-322), defeating Savannah State.
Chua won the individual title after firing a 12-over 156 (83-73). Her second-round 73 wasn't just the low round of the tournament; it also marked the fourth time this season she has shot in the 70s and was the team's best round of the season.
Zora Moore was second with a 19-over 163 (78-85), while
Mikea Granberry was tied for third after shooting a 20-over 164 (82-82).
Britney Smith also finished in the top five, coming in fifth with a 21-over 165 (83-82).
Crystal Smitherman was 10th with a 51-over 195 (98-97).
The Pirates finished seventh in the men's team standings with a two-day score of 679 (331-348). Tournament host FAMU shot a 600 to win the men's team title.
Kenny Gaither paced the Pirates, coming in 19th after shooting a 20-over 164 (82-82), while
T.J. O'Neal was tied for 20th after turning in a 21-over 165 (82-83). Je'Von Bell shot a 30-over 174 (81-93) to finish 28th.
Bell's first-round 81 was the team's best round of the tournament.
Brandon Reed wound up tied for 31st with a 36-over 180 (86-94), while
Dawson Hobbs shot a 39-over 183 (93-90) to finish 33rd.
The Pirates will return to action on April 24-26 for the MEAC Championships in Savannah, Ga., while the Lady Pirates will be back in action on April 26-28, when they also head to Savannah, Ga. for the MEAC Showcase.
