WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Hampton University sailing team was dominant on the James River this past weekend, winning the William & Mary Colony Cup held Saturday and Sunday.
The Pirates finished with just 27 points, 40 points fewer than second-place Virginia Tech. Christopher Newport came in third with 78 points.
In four regattas so far this season, the Pirates have two wins and a second-place finish. Hampton won the season-opening Edward Teach Memorial and came in second this past weekend in the N.Y. Maritime Fall Open.
This marks the 13th regatta win for the Pirates in head coach
Alessandro Ambrosi's tenure.
Maximilian Kuester and
Giuditta Di Laghi sailed in the A Division, recording just 12 points thanks to eight wins and two second-place finishes over 10 races.
Luca Taglialegne and
Elisabeth Kuester sailed in the B Division, finishing atop the division standings with 15 points. That duo won seven races, while also recording a second-place finish and two third-place efforts.
Strong and shifty winds were the story for both days.
The Pirates will be back at Strawberry Banks this Saturday and Sunday for the South Qualifier. For more information on Hampton University sailing, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5811, or visit the official Pirates website at
