SECOND-HALF COMEBACK DOOMS PIRATES VS. STONY BROOK

BALTIMORE, Md. – Three players scored in double figures – and Jermaine Marrow poured in a season-high 25 – but the Hampton University men's basketball team fell 76-66 to Stony Brook on Saturday at the SECU Arena to wrap up the Barclays Classic.

The Pirates are now 1-5 on the season.

Marrow's 25 points came on 7-for-15 shooting, a 4-for-7 effort from behind the arc, and a 7-for-9 clip from the free throw line. He also had a team-high three assists. Devon Oakley added 12 points for the Pirates, while Lawrence Cooks chipped in 11 points.

Both Oakley and Cooks also grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

The Pirates shot 44.0 percent (22-for-50) from the floor, despite shooting just under 35 percent in the second half. Hampton did shoot over 54 percent from the floor in the first half, and the Pirates were also 5-for-15 from distance.

Hampton also went 17-for-22 (77.3 percent) from the free throw line.

The Pirates opened the game on a 9-4 run, taking that lead at the 17:04 mark on a trey from Marrow. Even though Stony Brook fought back to tie the game at 12-12, Hampton responded by going on a 15-5 run to take a 27-17 lead after a Branden Aughburns layup with 6:45 left in the half.

The Seawolves cut the lead to five, 27-22, but the Pirates kept control in the closing minutes of the opening frame. A 9-4 spurt to end the half sent the Pirates into the locker room with a 36-26 lead following a Wilson-Fisher layup as time ran out.

All 11 of Cooks' points came in the first half. Marrow had 10 points at the break.

Marrow gave Hampton a 42-31 lead with a jumper with 17:54 left to play, but the Seawolves went on an 11-2 run to cut the lead to 44-42 after a layup from Akwasi Yeboah at the 15:09 mark. Oakley put the Pirates on top 52-46 with a 3-point play with 12:32 to play.

But Stony Brook mounted the comeback after that, going on a 13-1 run to take a 59-53 lead with 5:59 remaining after a Lucas Woodhouse 3-pointer. Aughburns cut the lead to 59-55 with two free throws at the 5:31 mark, but that was the closest the Pirates would get.

The Seawolves then closed the game outscoring the Pirates 17-11.

Stony Brook (1-4) shot 39.3 percent (22-for-56) from the floor – including a 50 percent clip in the second half. The Seawolves also held a 33-27 rebounding edge.

Woodhouse led four Seawolves in double figures with 17 points.
