LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University women's track & field team won its sixth straight Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Championship after Saturday's performance at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
Overall, the Lady Pirates have won 14 MEAC indoor titles.
Senior
Ce'aira Brown was named the Most Outstanding Runner after obliterating a pair of MEAC records and having a hand in winning four different events. She set new conference marks in the 800-meter run (a season-best 2:05.19) and the mile run (4:51.63).
Brown broke her own MEAC record in the 800-meter run, by nearly three seconds, and her mark in the mile run broke her own school record by almost five seconds. She won the 800-meter run by almost nine seconds, while the second-place runner in the mile run was almost 15 seconds behind Brown.
Brown won the 3,000-meter run in a season-best 10:06.42, and she was the anchor on the distance medley relay squad that took gold with a season-best 11:53.51.
Junior
Kaylor Murray, freshman
Tiara Robinson, and freshman
Pollyanna Velasco were also on that team.
Director of Track & Field
Maurice Pierce was named Most Outstanding Coach.
"We made a lot of mistakes, but with Ce'aira doing her thing, the rest of the team filled in the blanks," Pierce said. "I thought the team did a good job and Ce'aira took it to another level. Every time she ran and broke another record, it got the team more excited. I think this championship right here was a combination of a serious group effort, and Ce'aira was the knockout punch."
The Lady Pirates wound up with 143.33 points, while Florida A&M came in second with 114.
Robinson also won gold in the 4x400-meter relay, along with freshman
Erin Morrison, senior
Kristian Young, and senior
Tanisha Greene, after that quartet ran a 3:45.51.
Greene was second in the 400-meter dash with a 55.32.
Velasco came in third in the mile run with a time of 5:06.17, while Murray was third in the 5,000-meter run after turning in a season-best 18:16.81.
Graduate student
Siobhan Ford-Holland was second in the long jump with a mark of 5.62 meters (18 feet, 5.25 inches), matching her season-best mark.
Freshman
Kaitlin Scott came in third in the pentathlon with a season-best 3,365 points.
On the men's side, the Pirates finished fourth with 100 points, finishing 3.5 points behind third-place Maryland Eastern Shore. Bethune-Cookman repeated as indoor champions.
The Pirates swept the three podium positions in the heptathlon, with junior
Christian Faber-Kinney winning gold with a season-best 4,662 points. Freshman
Jerrick Powell racked up 4,514 points to come in second, while junior
Donmanique Hardy was third with 4,501 points.
Senior
Jasper Savoy finished second in both the 60-meter dash (6.81) and 200-meter dash (21.69).
Senior
Ramoye Simon was second in the 60-meter hurdles after running a 7.88, while junior
Rayon Black was second in the 400-meter dash with a 48.89.
Sophomore
Stanley Davis was third in the 800-meter run after turning in a 1:53.18.
Davis, Powell, and Black – along with sophomore
Gabriel Johnson – came in third in the 4x400-meter relay, earning bronze after running a 3:15.09.
Freshman
Trey Clark was second in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 4.27 meters (14 feet). Senior
Sulaiman Fareed was second in the shot put after tossing the implement a season-best 16.82 meters (55 feet, 2.25 inches).
The top three finishers in each event earned All-MEAC honors.
