ORLANDO, Fla. – The Hampton University tennis teams started their 2016 Spring Break swing through Florida on Sunday and lost a pair of 5-2 matches to Florida A&M in a non-conference matchup.
In the men's matchup, the Pirates scored wins at No. 1 singles as
Matthew Foster-Estwick took a three-set decision over Courage Okungbowa 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8), while
Miguel Suarez won at No. 5 singles over Jalen Evans 6-3, 6-0.
During doubles, the No. 3 team of
Charles Hudson and Suarez defeated Evans and Karlyn Small 7-5, but the Rattlers won at No. 1 and No. 2 to take the team point.
In the women's match, the Lady Pirates took a win also at No. 1 singles by Mariam Mitaishvii who defeated Alexis Dean 3-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-4).
Mikaela Pierce won at No. 3 over Olivia Rolle 6-4, 0-6, 6-1.
In doubles, the No. 2 team of
Julia d'Auvergne and
Cherise Slocombe took a 7-5 win over Dominique Henry and Rolle for the lone Hampton win.
Next up for the men will be South Dakota State on Tuesday at 12 p.m., while the Lady Pirates will take on South Dakota at 3 p.m. on Monday.
