FARMVILLE, Va. – Behind a suffocating defense to start the game and hot shooting from
Laren VanArsdale and
Alyssa Sweeney with 21 and 20 points apiece, Hampton scored an 86-70 win over Longwood on Saturday afternoon.
Hampton jumped out to an early 12-3 lead on a
Charlisa Jenkins layup at the 5:41 mark of the first. Longwood cut the lead to 16-13 as Khalia Hall drained a 3-pointer with 1:59 left in the opening quarter. The Lady Pirates closed the quarter on an 11-1 run to lead 27-14 as VanArsdale beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer.
A 3-ball by Sweeney and a layup from Jenkins gave Hampton a 32-14 lead at the nine minute mark of the half. The Lady Pirates closed the half scoring eight points in 90 seconds behind 3-pointers from Bates and Sweeney with a VanArsdale layup in between for a 53-27 halftime advantage. In the third, the lead grew to as much as 33 points on a 3-pointer by Sweeny to lead 77-44 with 1:18 left.
VanArsdale had 21 points and a season high nine assists, while Sweeney had 20 points hitting 4-of-7 from behind-the-arc. Joining them in double figures were
Ashley Bates with 18 points, six steals, five rebounds and four assists and
Mahaley Holit with 10 points and five assists.
Hampton hit 50.8% From the floor (31-of-61) and 11-of-25 from 3-point range (44%) which is the second most in a game this year and the most against a NCAA Division I opponent.
The Lady Pirates close out a three-game road swing on Tuesday in Clinton, S.C. facing Presbyterian College.
