RADFORD, Va. -- Hampton went on a 16-7 spurt over a two minute span to trim a 12-point deficit to three, but that was as close as they got as the Pirates fell 83-79 at Radford on Saturday.
The Pirates jumped out to an early 14-8 lead off a
Ben Stanley jumper with 13:49 left to lead 14-8. Radford (11-9, 6-2) went on an 11-4 run to lead 19-18 on a Carlik Jones layup with 9:05 left in the half.
Hampton (9-11, 4-3) rallied and took a 33-30 lead with 2:39 left on a tip-in by
Davion Warren. He hit a pair of free throws with 27 seconds left in the half as Hampton took a 35-34 lead into halftime.
The second half saw Radford score 15 straight points to take a 49-37 lead off a Devin Hutchinson 3-bal with 15:33 left. The lead was still at 15 points after a Travis Fields 3-pointer with 3:51 left as the hosts lead 75-60. The Pirates responded trimming the lead to 82-79 after a
Jermaine Marrow layup with six seconds left.
Stanley was the leading scorer for Hampton with 23 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots.
Greg Heckstall had 18 points, while Marrow added 14 points and Warren added 13 off the bench.
Hampton returns to action on Saturday hosting Presbyterian at 4 pm.
