NORFOLK, Va. –
Clara Smith had 10 kills and all-tournament honoree
Jessica Pugh recorded 13 digs as Hampton dropped a four-set match to West Virginia 23-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-11 in the final day of the Old Dominion Invitational.
Hampton became the first team to take a set off of West Virginia winning the opening set that saw 14 ties and five lead changes. Neither team held more than a three-point advantage as Hampton took a 10-7 lead following a kill by
Genevieve Reynolds.
The Lady Pirates took a two-point lead on a kill by
Gabby Calloway to lead 23-21. The teams traded points as Hampton took the opening set after a service error by the Mountaineers for the 25-23 win.
Calloway added eight kills and seven digs, while
Alyah Barkley and
Margaret Daramola added four kills apiece for Hampton (0-3). Brooke Irvin had 24 assists and three digs as well for the Lady Pirates.
Hampton returns to Norfolk on Tuesday night to take on Norfolk State at 6 pm in Gill Gymnasium.
