HAMPTON, VA – The Hampton Pirates closed out their home schedule for the 2021-22 season in dramatic fashion on Senior Night, beating Campbell 68-66 Wednesday night.
Marquis Godwin scored 23 points and shot a sharp 5-7 from three-point distance. Russell Dean scored 15 points (7-13 FG) grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Both
Najee Garvin and
Mario Haskett Jr. scored 10 points each.
Neither team could take advantage in the early going of the first half. Hampton would begin to pull away as they opened an eight-point lead with 3:12 remaining in the half. The Pirates would carry that eight-point lead into halftime, leading the Camels 37-29. The Pirates shot 51.8 percent from the field and 55.5 percent from three.
Hampton's offense cooled off in the second half, leaving a window for Campbell to get back into the game. Campbell chipped away at the lead the entire second half, as Hampton never surrendered the lead in the period. However, Campbell would tie the game with a free-throw a 66 with just 14 seconds remaining. Dean, on the ensuing possession, would once again lift the Pirates to victory on a last-second bucket, as he drained the game winning jump shot with one second remaining.
The Pirates finish the season on the road, taking on High Point Saturday, February 26 at 2 p.m.
