Pirates Wrap Up Big South Championships, Women Finish in Third and Aduma Named MVP

High Point, NC- The Hampton Men's and Women's Track and Field teams competed in the Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 9-11 at High Point University; HU's Amira Aduma (Hampton, VA) was named the Most Valuable Athlete of the conference championship securing a total of 23 points.
 
"I'm so happy to have come to Hampton," said Aduma. "I wasn't expecting to win the MVP award, but I appreciate it so much. I feel like it shows my hard work is appreciated. Also, I'm just grateful I got to contribute to the team."

Kamaria Horton (Mcdonough, GA) was named to the women's All-Academic team. 
Jordan Walker (Alexandria, VA) was named to the men's All-Academic team. 
 
Day One 
On day one, four Pirates qualified for the finals in the 400m, and several Pirates secured top eight finishes. 
 
Aduma led off strong for the Pirates in the long jump with a first-place finish, recording a season-best jump of 20 feet, 1 1/2inches. 
 
Junior Keyonte Midgett competed in the men's long jump, placing seventh with a personal best jump of 23-4 ¾.
 
The Pirates also had a handful of qualifiers in the preliminary rounds of the 400m hurdles, 400m, and 200m dash. Junior Deja Grant (Springdale, MD) qualified for finals in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.82, clinching third place. Senior Noah Langford (Portsmouth, VA) qualified for the finals of the 400m hurdles running a 53.10 on the men's side. Aduma qualified for finals in the 200m with a personal best of 23.70, taking fifth place, while sophomore Jaydea Carter (Pembroke Pines, FL) finished sixth, recording a PR of 23.89. 
 
In the field events, Abria Smith finished fifth in the hammer throw with a throw of 50.25m (164-10).
 
Day Two 
On Tuesday, the Pirates had a strong day in their field events. Three Pirates placed in the women's triple jump. Dieusi Armand (Westbury, NY) finished in third place with a jump of 12.43m (40-9 ½), Anissa Bernard placed sixth with a leap of 12.04m (39-6), and Senior Jazlyn Jefferson (Jarrett, VA) finished in eighth place measuring 11.99m (39-4). 
 
Senior Otis Slayton (South Boston, VA) placed fifth in the men's triple jump with a leap of 14.06m (46-1 ½). Senior Nicholas Edwards (Decatur, GA) placed fifth in the men's shot put with a personal best throw of 15.93m measuring 52 feet, 3 ¼ inches. In the women's shot put, Freshman Oluwatomilyao Akintunde (Hamburg, NJ) placed second with a personal best of 14.92m measuring 48 feet, 11 ½ inches, and Freshman Victoria Caldwell placed seventh with a toss of 13.53 (44-4 ¾).
 
The duo of Aduma and Carter snagged spots in the 100m on day two to add to their success from day one. Aduma finished fourth, clocking in at 11.66 to win the first heat, while Carter placed eighth with a time of 11.85. 
 
Langford secured a finals spot in the 110m hurdles running 14.49 in prelims to finish sixth. Maya Seay ran a 13.99, placing fifth, and Carter clocked in at 14.07, placing seventh, advancing both Pirates to the 100m hurdles finals.
 
In the dashes, Josiah Hill (North Chesterfield, VA) ran a 47.91 for the men, while Kyna Robinson (Garner, NC) ran a 57.34 to qualify for the finals in the 400m. 
 
Dugion Blackman (Kingston, Jamaica) qualified for the men's 800m finals with a first-place finish with a time of 1:50.87.  
 
Jordan Mozie (Upper Marlboro, MD) finished fourth, clocking in at 2:13.11, and Morgan Williams (Roseland, NJ) finished eighth at 2:16.65 to both qualify for finals in the 800M.
 
The Pirates ended day two with 40 points on the women's side, putting them in second, and 13 points on the men's side, placing them in eighth.
 
Day Three
Hampton's relay teams capped off a successful season with three second place finishes and one third place finish. 
 
The women's 4X100 relay team of Seay, Aduma, Jefferson, and Carter captured second place with a time of 45.47. Their 4X400 relay team comprised of Grant, Mozie, Kayla Spencer (Highland Springs, VA), and Robinson also finished second clocking in at 3.45.58. 
 
On the men's side, HU's 4X400 relay team of Langford, Josiah Hill (North Chesterfield, VA), Blackman, and Rushane Fullerton (Kingston, JA) finished second running a 3:11.58. The 4x100 relay team of Abraham Evans (Virginia Beach, VA), Moffat Winjiru (Nairobi, Kenya), Deondre Little (Suffolk, VA), and Olakunle Akande (Rahway, NJ).  finished third with a time of 40.18. 
 
Grant secured a second place finish in the women's 400m hurdles clocking in at 58.89
 
In the women's 100m hurdles Hampton's Carter secured a top three finish at third running a 13.68, while Seay followed up finishing fourth with a time of 13.75. 
 
Aduma captured another strong finish placing third in the 100m with a time of 11.59. Aduma also finished fourth in the 200m with a time of 23.80, while Carter followed up in fifth running a 24.29. 
 
In the men's 800m Blackman finished in second with a time of 1:49.88, while Mozie placed third in the women's 800m with a time of 2:10.48. Mozie also finished fifth in the women's 1500m with a time of 4:40.82.
 
In the field events, Jailyn Raines (Hampton, VA) finished third in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.66m (5.5 ¼). 
 
Kamaria Horton finished fourth with a throw of 45.84m (150-5) in the discus.
