HAMPTON, VA- Hampton Men's Basketball Sophomore Amir Nesbitt travels to Brazil to play for team Virgin Islands in the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup at Geraldao Arena.
Although a Newport News, VA native, Nesbitt's family is from the Virgin Islands.
When Amir was a teenager, his parents were contacted to play for the Federation's 17 youth team. Two years later, he received a call to play for their men's team before taking a hiatus for a few years.
The 19th FIBA AmeriCup will take place September 2-11 in Recife, Brazil. The competitive slate will feature 12 countries playing for the right to be crowned the best in the Americas region.
Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico, Uruguay, United States, and Venezuela are the 12 teams set to compete that emerged from the 16-team qualifiers.
"I expect to play some great teams," said Nesbitt. "I'm very excited; it will be a first-time experience since I've never been to Brazil."
The top two teams in each cluster and the best third-place teams will advance to the Final Phase, with the Quarterfinals starting on Sept. 8, which is played in a knockout format.
The Virgin Islands team's first game will be on September 3 against Argentina. The contest will be available for streaming on ESPN+.
