HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 21, 2023) – The Lady Pirates fought hard in tonight's loss to the UNCW Seahawks (20-25, 16-25, 20-25).
Madison Clark led the Lady Pirates in kills with a season-high of 12, followed by
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues and
Rhisen Davis with seven each.
Kalyn Pierre and
Nadja Bulatovic each reached double digit assists with 14 and 11 respectively. Three different Lady Pirates smashed aces. Clark posted three, Rodrigues had two and Bulatovic one.
On the defensive side of the ball, Clark notched a career-high 14 digs.
Kylah Hunter and
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues both finished with 10 digs.
Rickelle Wescott and
Tyller Williams both contributed with two blocks.
How it Happened
Set 1
The Seahawks started fast, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead. Hampton gathered and took five out of six and pulled ahead 5-4. The game was tied at seven thanks to a kill by Bulatovic. The Lady Pirates trailed 11-13 when the Seahawks rattled-off five straight to put the set out of reach. Hampton had two three-point runs, but it ended 20-25. Clark and Rodrigues both had four kills in the set.
Set 2
The teams were tied at four and then the Seahawks led at 9-5. The Lady Pirates rallied back and trailed by one (8-9). Hampton struggled to string multiple points together as the Seahawks took seven out of the next nine. The Lady Pirates closed the margin to five at 13-18, but the Seahawks pulled away (16-25). Pierre posted seven assists in the set.
Set 3
The Lady Pirates were fired up in the third set. They jumped out to an early 6-4 lead and then went on a 5-0 run (11-5). The tide turned fast in the Seahawks favor, as they stole eight strait points (13-11). Just a moment later, and UNCW was ahead 18-13. The Lady Pirates brought the score to within three (19-22), but it ended 20-25. Clark tallied six digs in the set and Hunter and Rodrigues had five.
