LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (Nov. 24, 2023) … Hampton's Cheyenne Talbot personally outscored New Mexico State in the game's first five minutes to give the Lady Pirates an 8-7 lead. Her 20 first-half points eclipsed her career-high of nine and she finished the night with 25 points.
But the Aggies outside shooting and inside rebounding lifted New Mexico (3-2) to a 78-47 triumph over Hampton (0-4) in the first game of the Long Island Classic. New Mexico State's Naila Harding had 16 first-half points as the Aggies built a 36-28 halftime lead. Harding finished the game with six, three-pointers and finished with 22 points for the Aggies.
Harding had three treys in the first quarter as the Aggies built an 18-12 lead. The two teams played on even terms throughout the second quarter which ended with a last-second Hail Mary three-pointer by Talbot. New Mexico State led, 36-28 at intermission.
Midway through the third quarter, 33 of Hampton's first 35 points were scored by either Talbot (22) or Camryn Hill (11). Hampton trailed the Aggies 38-33 when Talbot was called for her fourth personal foul and left the game. New Mexico State scored eight straight points to lead 51-36 with 4:34 left in the third quarter.
Without Talbot, Hampton managed just two field goals, both by Hill, in the third quarter and seven free throws as the Aggies pulled away, 61-40, outscoring the Lady Pirates, 25-12, in the quarter. The Aggies outscored the Lady Pirates, 17-7, in the final quarter for the win.
In all, Talbot and Hill combined for 38 of Hampton's 47 points and 12 of Hampton's 14 field goals in the game.
Hampton had a contingent of fans cheering on the Lady Pirates. Coach Davis Six is a native of Brooklyn and grew up just 6.8 miles from the LIU campus. In addition, Aisha Dabo is a native of Queens and Heaven Accimeus, who is sidelined with injury, is from Brooklyn.
Hampton, which has lost five games in a row dating back to last season, takes on host Long Island on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 3:00 (Eastern).
