LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (Nov. 25, 2023) … Hampton (0-5) lost its sixth consecutive game dating back to last season, falling to host Long Island (1-5), 60-53, in the second game of the Long Island Classic. After battling to a 29-29 tie at halftime, the Sharks outscored the Lady Pirates, 18-6, in the third quarter to pull away. The win was the first of the season for Long Island.
The Lady Pirates dressed just nine players for the game with two starters out with injury and four others sidelined. The lack of depth and fresh players plagued the team in the late-going of the contest.
Hampton shot just 13.3 percent from the field in the pivotal third quarter and were outscored, 18-6, in to give the Sharks a 47-35 heading into the final quarter of play. Hampton battled back and closed the gap to one but Long Island's Marish Elohim made four consecutive free throws in the final minute to hold off the Lady Pirates.
In a back-and-forth first quarter, Hampton scored the game's first six points before the Sharks reeled off 10-straight to take the lead. A three-pointer by Nigeria Harkless at the buzzer gave Long Island a 15-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Lady Pirates fell behind by as many as 11 in the second quarter before storming back. Camryn Hill scored nine straight points for the Lady Pirates and a three-pointer by Arlisha Boston tied the score, 29-29, at halftime. Hill led all scorers with 16 points in the first half including three treys.
But the third quarter proved to be Hampton's undoing.
Hampton's 53 points were the most for the team this season. Camryn Hill led all scorers with 26 points and Aisha Dabo tallied 14 with nine rebounds, both career highs, for the Lady Pirates. Hampton struggled from the free throw line converting just 5-of-14.
Prior to the game, one of the referees suffered a heart attack and was transported to a local hospital for observation.
The Lady Pirates return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 29 when the Hampton takes on East Carolina in an 11:00 a.m. tip-off.
