Margaret O. Daramola, a three-year member of the Hampton volleyball team, was named Virginia's new Poet Laureate, it was announced by Governor Glenn Youngkin. Daramola will graduate from Hampton this spring with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English and a Minor in History.
"Margaret Daramola embodies the positive attributes of the Hampton University student-athlete. She is a standout in the classroom as well as on the volleyball court. We are pleased and privileged to have her represent Hampton University and the Commonwealth of Virginia the next two years as Poet Laureate," said Director of Athletics Anthony Henderson Sr.
Daramola redshirted her freshman year in 2019. After the 2020 season was canceled due to Covid, she played in 64 sets in 2021. Her 92 kills and 15 service aces each ranked third on the team. She has earned Dean's List honors every semester and was awarded the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship and Student Poet Initiative award. A member of Hampton's Pre-Law Society, she is Vice President of the African Student Association.
