Hampton to Hold First Football Practice

HAMPTON, VA. (July 28, 2023) ... Hampton will hold its first football practice for the upcoming season on Thursday, August 3. Coach Robert Prunty's team returns eight starters on offense and four on defense. The Pirates posted a 4-7 record last year in their first season as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA).
The practice is closed to the public.
Redshirt junior Malcolm Mays (Arlington, Texas) returns at quarterback. The 6-5, 195-pound Mays passed for 1,574 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Tyler Thompson (Newport News, Va.) is the top returning receiver. The 6-0, 170-pound redshirt junior caught 22 passes for 278 yards and two scores in 2022. Redshirt senior Darran Butts (Suffolk, Va.), a 5-10, 195-pounds, rushed for a team-best 525 yards (5.0 yards per carry) and three touchdowns a year ago. The defense will be anchored by 6-0, 220-pound linebacker Qwahsin Townsel (Egg Harbor, N.J.), who registered 100 total tackles in 2022 including four tackles for loss.
The Pirates open the 2023 campaign on Sept. 2 at 3:00 p.m. in Harrison, N.J. against Grambling State in the Brick City Classic. Tickets for the contest are available at Ticketmaster.com.
