Lady Pirates Drop Home Conference Opener to Stony Brook

HAMPTON, VA. (Sept. 10, 2023) … Hampton women's soccer hosted the Stony Brook Seawolves this afternoon. The Lady Pirates found themselves trailing by two early. A late goal by HU shrunk SBU's advantage before halftime. However, four goals in the second half by the Seawolves secured a 6-1 victory for Stony Brook.
How It Happened
In the opening ten minutes, both sides jockeyed to score the first goal of the match. While the Seawolves produced the first three shots on goal of the contest, Alexis Deveaux was there to make the save. SBU would score in the 11th minute with a goal by Ashley Manor. A foul in the penalty box gave Stoney Brook another chance to find the back of the net. The Seawolves making the penalty shot increased their lead to two.
Later on in the first half, The Lady Pirates offense started to click. Taking advantage of the SBU's mistakes, Mattie Edozie was able to find Madisyn Strange to make it 2-1. Strange's goal in the 42nd minute would be the first of her collegiate career. Heading into the half, Hampton found themselves trailing by one goal.
Right out of the gate Stony Brook's attack broke free regaining their two-goal lead. With goals in the span of five minutes, the Seawolves built up a 5-1 advantage. Hampton would be held to only three shots in the second half. With only one minute remaining in the match, another foul committed in the penalty box by HU proved to be costly. Stony Brook converted the penalty kick scoring another goal.

The Lady Pirates hit the road to face conference foe UNC Wilmington. Thursday's match is set to start at 7:00 PM and will be streamed on FloFC.
