Hampton Men’s Basketball Suffers Close Loss to High Point, 76-73

GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (Nov. 26, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell in the fifth-place game of the Cayman Islands Classic to High Point 76-73. Throughout the contest, the Pirates and Panthers traded blows. George Beale Jr. led the Pirates offensively but Eunique Rink helped the Pirates on the defensive end. The freshman forward had a career-high two blocks. With the lead exchanging between the two teams in the final minute, High Point pulled away by making shots and hitting their free throws.

The Panthers opened the game on an 11-4 run jumping out to an early advantage. For Hampton on the offensive end, Rink produced two consecutive buckets. The Newark, N.J. native had a career-high eight points and five rebounds.

Coming out of the media timeout George Beale Jr. hit a jumper to make it a five-point game. While High Point continued to make shots from beyond the arc, the Pirates brought it back to within four points. Throughout the first half Kyrese Mullen and Etienne Strothers were crucial for HU. The duo was able to strike from in and outside of the paint.

With less than 12 minutes remaining in the half, a pair of three throws by Richard Goods shrunk High Point's lead down to two, 19-17. The Panthers were able to quickly rebuild its advantage by hitting shots from beyond the arc. High Point would go 7-for-13 from three and 55 percent for the game. Hampton once again swung the momentum in its favor with freshman Daniel Johnson hitting shots. While the Pirates were still behind the Panthers 29-28 it was the closest the contest had been since the 19:07 mark.

Before heading into the half High Point's Trae Benham hit a three to put the Panthers up eight.  With less than a minute to go Beale Jr. hit another three for Hampton. The Pirates did get a stop on defense during High Point's next possession. Hampton had multiple opportunities to make it a one-possession contest but missed both shots.

Both the Pirates and the Panthers continued to trade blows with neither taking control of the game. While Noah Farrakhan had a quiet first half, he propelled Hampton's offense in the final 20 minutes.  Farrakhan finished the contest and had 16 points in the second frame while going 6-for-11 from the field.

Within the final four minutes of the game Hampton brought it back to within one possession on four separate occasions. After a pair of free throws by Dan Banister Jr. the Pirates took advantage of a missed free throw by the Panthers. Farrakhan was able to create separates at the top of the key and fired off a three. The West Virginia transfer's shot from beyond the arc was good giving Hampton the lead 73-72.

High Point on the next offensive possession hit a jumper from inside the paint but left 10 seconds on the clock. The Pirates had another look to regain the advantage but missed the jumper. With a foul on the rebound, the Panthers were sent to the free-throw line and made both attempts.

Hampton men's basketball returns to action at the Convocation Center on Dec. 3 at 7:00 p.m. The Pirates will host the Aggies of North Carolina A&T. Tuesday's home game will also mark the start of Coastal Athletic Association Play.
