HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 7, 2023) … Hampton University Athletics celebrates the 38th anniversary of National Girls and Women in Sports Day. NGWSD is observed in all 50 states with the goal of putting girls and women in sports in a national spotlight. NGWSD is powered by the Women's Sports Foundation, a non-profit charity established in 1974 with the on-going mission to empower female athletes of all-ages to reach their potential in and outside of sports.
To commemorate the national celebration, Hampton women's teams held a multi-sport youth clinic after the Hampton Women's Basketball home contest against Hofstra on Jan. 28. Youth who had a ticket to the game were able to participate in the clinic for free. Along with the 65 children that participated, all HU women's sports, coaches, and athletic staff participated.
The event started with Hampton's Senior Women Administrator Renia Edwards discussing her role as an SWA. She was followed up by guest speaker Mikayla Sayle. Sayle was a former player for Hampton Women's Basketball from 2014-18 and is a native of Hampton, Va. She is currently the CEO and host of Sport Xposure Podcast. Sayle also is the current Executive Director of the non-profit Frontline Millionaires University.
Participants were then divided into groups by age and led to their stations. Groups rotated through all sports stations that were led by Hampton University student-athletes. At the stations, participants were able to learn about the women's sports offered at HU. The student-athletes were able to show off their sport through hands-on skill training.
Today, we ask that you consider supporting our women's sports programs in any way you see fit. You can buy a ticket to a women's basketball game, plan to attend other upcoming events, or donate to one of our Hampton Athletic Foundation Funds that supports our women's teams specifically!
