Hampton Athletics Set to Host Local Public Schools Students

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 9, 2024) … Hampton University Athletics in partnership with the Hampton and Newport News school districts are set to honor the Super Scholars. The Super Scholars program is aimed to recognize the outstanding and scholastic achievements of the youth in the Hampton Roads community. By honoring students at upcoming games, the schools are given an opportunity for broader exposure to showcase their success. This initiative is for elementary and middle school students both in Hampton and Newport News.

When asked about the Super Scholars program, Hampton University Director of Athletics Anthony D Henderson Sr. stated, "Community engagement is important to the mission of our university. I am glad that athletics can provide these opportunities for members of the local community, especially young students, to visit our campus. "

The first set of students from the Hampton Schools will be recognized on Feb. 10 at the HU men's basketball game against UNCW. Newport News students are to be honored on Feb. 17 when the Pirates take on Towson. Each scholar who meets the program's requirements will receive two complimentary tickets to the Hampton men's basketball game that they will be recognized.

If schools are still interested in signing up for the Super Scholars program please contact Marquis Smalls at marquis.smalls@hamptonu.edu.

Also, in addition to engagement through the Pirate Scholars program, Hampton Athletics will also welcome over 500 students, faculty, and staff from Newport News Public Schools to the games on Feb. 10 and Feb. 17 as well. These students will attend as part of an initiative lead by the Newport News Public Schools Family & Community Engagement Department.

Athletics Director Henderson also added "This is just the beginning for our engagement efforts and we look forward to continuing to strengthen relationships with our neighbors in the Hampton Roads community."
