Lady Pirates Split Doubleheader With North Carolina A&T

HAMPTON, Va. (March 29, 2024) … Hampton University softball team this afternoon split the doubleheader with North Carolina A&T. In both contests, the Lady Pirates bullpen continued to produce. In the first game, HU would fall to the Aggies late 4-3 but recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts. However, the Lady Pirates won the second contest 2-0. Carmynn Bonner had a solid day going 6-8 from the plate and recording four RBIs. 

Game One

The Lady Pirates got on the board early striking in the first frame. Carmynn Bonner started off the contest with a double to center field. While Hampton's next batter was out, the sacrifice bunt moved Bonner over to third. Emily Kepple brought in HU's leadoff hitter on a deep fly out to the outfield making it 1-0. 

However, the Aggies found a way to tie it up in the bottom of the third. Before Hampton could record on out, North Carolina A&T had runners on first and second. While the Lady Pirates quickly recorded two outs, N.C. A&T drove in a run on a single through the left side. 

Hampton's bullpen kept the Lady Pirates within striking distance throughout the contest. Emily Workman got the start in game one and recorded four strikeouts in her three innings of work. Freshman Angelina Branch was called out of the bullpen to relieve Workman. The Chesterfield, Va. native, produced a dominant three innings. Branch in her seventh appearance of the season, began with five consecutive strikeouts. Hampton finished game one with a season-high 11 strikeouts. 

During the fifth frame, Bonner came up clutch for the Lady Pirates once again. After Kyliee began the fifth with a base knock to right field, Bonner drove her in with a double in the gap. The Dayton, Ohio native, recorded her 10th multi-hit contest of the 2024 campaign. North Carolina A&T in the bottom half of the sixth tied it up once again. The Aggies Jamari Moss hit a solo home run to center field.

While the Lady Pirates started off the final frame with a flyout, Kylie Hill produced her second hit of the contest. North Carolina A&T during the next at-bat got the second out of the stanza. Bonner once more tallied a crucial RBI for Hampton. The sophomore on a single up the middle brought Hill in making it 3-2 late. N.C. A&T was able to score late in the bottom of the seventh. The Aggies with their second home run of the game walked it off securing the 4-3 victory.

Game Two

Both sides were held scoreless through the majority of the contest. For the Aggies Kayla Douglas got the start. Douglas in her five innings of work only gave five hits and struck out three batters. Freshman Taryn Bennett made her 15th start of the season for the Lady Pirates. Bennett pitched 5.2 innings and did not give up a single run. The Bothell, Wash. native also recorded a career-high seven strikeouts. 

At the top of the fifth inning, Coach Monique White's squad broke the scoreless contest. While the Aggies were able to manufacture two quick outs. Cheyenne Crenshaw got on base with an infield single. Carmynn Bonner drove in Crenshaw on single to centerfield. The Aggies would respond quickly getting the final out of the frame.

Later on in the contest, Hampton was able to build upon its advantage. With a runner at second, Bonner drove in another run for the Lady Pirates making it 2-0. Emily Workman was brought in out of the bullpen late in the sixth inning. Workman picked up the save holding the Aggies' bats quiet for 1.1 innings. 

Hampton softball returns to action against North Carolina A&T tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
