Lady Pirates Drop Doubleheader to Howard

HAMPTON, Va. (March 5, 2024) … Hampton University's softball team fell in both contests this afternoon to rivals Howard. In game one the Lady Pirates jumped out to an early lead. The Bison would score the winning run in the final frame escaping with a 4-3 win. In game two of the doubleheader, Howard's bats remained on fire. The Bison finished the contest with a total of 10 hits. While the Lady Pirates were able to produce runs late, HU lost to Howard 6-2.

Game One

Hampton was able to drive in the first run of the contest in the bottom of the first. Kylie Hill was able to get on base early taking advantage of an error made by Howard. Taylor Ivey gave HU its first hit of the afternoon and advanced Hill to third. Sophomore Carmynn Bonner's base knock to the outfield gave the Lady Pirates a one-run advantage. Hampton would load the bases on with a walk from Janae Lyles. However, Howard was able to get out of the jam getting two consecutive outs.

Later on in the third inning, the Bison found a way to make it 1-1. In the bottom half of the frame, the Lady Pirates responded by scoring another run. Coach Monique White's squad had the bases loaded before Howard could record an out. While Leah Maduro flied out to left field she still recorded an RBI with Bonner scoring.

During the top of the fifth Howard once again made it a tied contest. The Bison throughout the first game did most of their damage with two outs. On a single to right field, Howard made it 2-2. The Lady Pirates once again reclaimed its one-run advantage. Bonner started out the frame with her second single of the game. She would advance to second on an error by the Bison. Lyles brought the leading run in on a double to left center field.

While Hampton throughout the game was able to answer Howard's advances, the Lady Pirates bats went silent in the final two frames. The Bison scored the tying run in the sixth on another double. Howard only produced one hit in the final inning. With Hampton giving up a walk early on the Bison brought in the winning run on a ball to the outfield.

Game Two

The Bison bats continued to produce with two outs once again. In the first inning of game two Howard jumped out to a 3-0 lead with a two-out double. In the following fame, another run was able to cross for the Bison. Before the Lady Pirates could record a hit they found themselves trailing by four.

In the top half of the third, Howard built upon its early advantage producing another run. However, the Lady Pirates started to dig into the Bison lead. Janae Lyles recorded a leadoff double in the bottom of the fourth frame. While the next two batters for the Hampton grounded out, HU was able to advance Lyles making it 6-1.

During the following frame, the Lady Pirates brought another run across the plate. Carmynn Bonner recorded Hampton's third hit of the contest with a single to center field. Lyles gave Coach White's squad another baserunner with a walk. Lyles only recorded one hit in game two but went a perfect 1-1 from the plate. While Brooke Williams flew out, Bonner was able to score on the sacrifice. Hampton's two late runs would not be enough as Howard went on to win 6-2.

The Lady Pirates are back in action this Friday beginning Coastal Athletic Association play against UNCW.
