HAMPTON, Va. (June 10, 2024) … Hampton will begin its off-season training program on Tuesday, June 11. Interim head coach
Trent Boykin will greet members of his team as workouts commence at Armstrong Stadium.
Boykin, a 1995 Youngstown State graduate, played under legendary Jim Tressel with the Penguins. He served as head coach at Lane for two seasons and has been a member of the Hampton staff since 2020. He was elevated to interim head coach last month.
The Pirates will return five starters on offenses and six on defense. The offense will be led by third-team All-CAA running back
Elijah Burris, who rushed for 803 yards (114.7 yards per game) in eight games a year ago, and quarterback
Chris Zellous, who passed for 1,497 yards with 13 TDs and rushed for another 559 yards with nine touchdowns in 2023. On defense, defensive back
Corey Wilson made 37 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in 2023 while defensive back
Jordan White had 35 stops with two interceptions.
The Pirates boast six home contests at Armstrong Stadium this season. The 2024 campaign kicks off on Aug. 31 when the Pirates host longtime rival Morgan State at 6:00 p.m.
Hampton will celebrate Homecoming on Oct. 26 when the Pirates face off with Elon at 2:00 p.m.
Hampton finished with a 5-6 overall mark in 2023 including a 3-5 record in CAA play.
Last year, the CAA had four teams (Albany, Delaware, Richmond and Villanova) earn berths in the 2023 NCAA FC23-24 S playoffs, which marked the 13th time that at least four CAA teams were chosen for the playoffs. The conference has had at least one team reach the quarterfinals every year since 1995 and has had a team advance to the semifinals in 10 of the past 11 seasons. The CAA will sport a new look in 2024 with the addition of Bryant from Smithfield, R.I. although the Pirates will not face the newcomer in 2024.
