Pirates Second Surge Falls Short to William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (Jan. 23, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell on the road to the Tribe of William & Mary 94-83. While the Pirates trailed by 18 at the half, HU brought the contest back to within a point in the second frame. The Tribe struggled from the field early in the second half but still shot 46.2 percent from the field.

Hampton scored the game's first points with a fast break layup from George Beale Jr. Beale Jr. also scored the Pirate's first four points. Off the bench, Trevor Smith hit a three putting Hampton up 7-4 before the first media timeout. Coming out of the stoppage of play, Smith hit another shot from beyond the arc.

William & Mary started to dig into the Pirate's early advantage. However, Eunique Rink drew the foul and made the layup inside the paint. With Rink's free throw, Hampton took its largest lead of the half 13-6. The Pirates held onto the advantage until the 10:21 mark when the Tribe's Caleb Dorsey made a three-pointer.

Both sides exchanged the lead until the under-eight media timeout. William & Mary produced a 19-6 to take control of the first half. The Tribe had success on the offensive glass grabbing seven boards. William & Mary converted the seven offensive boards to nine second-chance points. With a tip-in layup before the buzzer, the Tribe entered the half up 49-31.

In the beginning of the second frame, Hampton produced a 20-4 run cutting the Tribe's lead down to four. Goods helped the Pirates on the glass with nine rebounds.

William & Mary jumped back out to a double-digit advantage. The Tribe took advantage of Hampton's foul trouble. At the 12-minute mark, Farrakhan fouled out of the contest. Coach Ivan Thomas's side persevered once again. With the Pirates hitting back-to-back shots from beyond the arc, William & Mary's 18-point lead was shrunk down to one 66-65.
