Basketball falls to Holy Cross in game two of Brown Bears Invitational

PROVIDENCE, RI. (Nov. 14, 2025) … Hampton lost a defensive battle Sunday afternoon to Holy Cross in game two of the Brown Bears Invitational 67-61.

Similar to Friday night, offense was on display early. The two teams combined for a total 17 points over the course of the first five minutes. Hampton did a lot of their damage early in the paint Josh Ogundele put in a hook shot followed by two Xzavier Long buckets. Over the course of the next four minutes, the Pirates defense settled in, rattling off a 5-0 run capped off by a Daniel Johnson three-pointer. 

The Pirates and Crusaders continued to trade blows over the course of the next eight minutes taking the two sides to the under four media timeout with Holy Cross clinging onto a tight 22-20 lead. Long continued to be the bright spot for Hampton pouring in eight points to go along with 5 rebounds. 

The Crusaders closed the half on a 10-9 run to hold on to a 32-29 lead at the break. Hampton was paced by Long'1s 12 points and six boards, while Quintin Cooper added five of his own. The Pirates shot 40.7 percent from the field in the first half, as the Crusades defense held Hampton to just 3-13 from behind the arc. 

Out of the break, the two offenses exploded. Over the course of the first four minutes the two sides poured in 18 total points between the two. Ogundele was big inside for the Pirates adding a quick four points. Hampton was able to weather the Holy Cross run over the course of the next four minutes and after two monster rebounds from Long, the Pirates took the lead 49-46 with 11:47 remaining. 

The two defenses were stout over the course of the next eight minutes, as Holy Cross held Hampton to just 11 points over the span. Long drained two free throws out of the final media timeout and Hampton trailed 61-59. Over the course of the next four minutes, the Crusaders were able to execute and knock down free throws late to take down Hampton in game two of the Brown Bears Invitational. 

Hampton was led by Long's double-double of 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Johnson (12), Cooper (11) and Ogundele (10) also scored in double figures for Hampton on the afternoon. The Pirates shot 37 percent from the field on the night while shooting a staggering 16-17 from the charity stripe.

The Pirates return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Boston College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
