ORLANDO, Fla. (Mar. 12, 2025) … The Hampton men's and women's tennis teams had a total of three matches on Wednesday in Orlando with the women falling to Bryant (4-0) and defeating Quinnipiac (4-3), while the men lost to N.C. Central (4-0).
 
The women's evening match with Quinnipiac provided the excitement of the day as the Pirates rallied from a 3-2 team deficit to win the top two singles matches, each in three-sets and each in a 10-7 super tie-breaker as Diana Starodubtseva and Meiri Okuwaki provided the deciding victories.
 
Hampton won the doubles point with victories from Serena Bryan and Starodubtseva at the top and Masa Mitic and Okuwaki at the three spot. Quinnipiac quickly took the lead with wins at five and six, before Bryan won 6-2, 6-0 at four singles to even the match.
 
Quinnipiac won at the three spot before Starodubtseva took a 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-7) win to even the match. Okuwaki finished the comeback with a 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win at number two.
 
In the women's match with Bryant, the Pirates lost at the two and three spots in doubles. In singles, Bryant won at the three, six and in a three-set match at the top.
 
The men's match with N.C. Central saw the Eagles win at the two and three spots in doubles, while in singles they won in straight sets at the one, five and six spots.
 
Hampton's spring break trip ends on Thursday with the women playing South Dakota at noon, while the men will have two matches facing Marquette at noon and then Vassar at 6:30 p.m. The noon matches will be at Lake Beerman Tennis Center, while the Vassar match will be at the USTA National Center.
