Slow Start Sinks Pirates At N.C. A&T

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 18, 2026) … An 0-for-10 start doomed the Hampton women's basketball team on the road Sunday afternoon as they fell 70-57 to N.C. A&T at the Corbett Sports Center.
N.C. A&T opened the game on an 11-2 run as Chaniya Clark and Dmya Tucker had four each for the Aggies in the opening five minutes. Hampton went 0-for-10 in the first nine minutes and scored only a pair of Kayla Lezama free throws and one Arlisha Boston free throw
The lead grew to 13-2 after a driving layup from Darrionna Howard before Lezama broke the 0-for-10 drought after a steal and driving layup with 55 seconds left.
The second quarter started with a run of 5-0 spurts by each team. Hampton's started with Arlisha Boston recording a pair of buckets including a three-pointer cut the 10-point first quarter deficit in half at 15-10 at the 8:27 mark. The Aggies answered her five point burst with one of their own as a pair of Paris Locke free throws to take the lead back to double digits at 20-10.
Hampton cut the deficit to five again on a pair of Lezama free throws with 3:50 left to trail 21-16. The hosts then put up a 10-0 burst to take a 31-16 lead as Crystal Hardy drained a three-pointer with 86 seconds left. Boston stopped that drought with a pair of free throws 18 seconds later.
A&T opened the second half scoring the first seven points of the third quarter on a pair of Clark free throws with 8:01 left to lead 40-18. The Pirates cut the deficit to 15 on a couple of occasions in the third quarter with the last being on a turnaround jumper from McElrath to trail 44-29 with 4:34 remaining.
Hampton closed the game scoring the last eight points with McElrath scoring five and Lezama draining another three-pointer to end the scoring.
McElrath paced Hampton with 20 points and Lezama added 17 to lead Hampton. Boston had eight points and a steal as well for the Pirates (8-9/2-3). Clark paced the hosts with 20 points and seven boards.
The Pirates are back home for a pair of home games starting on Friday night at 7 p.m. when they entertain Campbell.
