Neilson-Screen Tennis Stadium

The Neilson-Screen Tennis Stadium serves as the home for the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Hampton University. The facility is located between Armstrong Stadium and Holland Hall and features six courts. The 30-year old venue boasts an impressive brick façade and has seating for some 350 fans and is equipped with a full concession stand.

The Neilson-Screen Tennis Stadium is a fitting tribute to the two coaches who built the nationally-known tennis program at Hampton University. Dr. Herman Neilson and Dr. Robert Screen combined to coach the Pirate tennis teams from 1931-12. Dr. Neilson built the program into a regional power, winning 27 CIAA crowns during his tenure.

He turned the coaching reins to Dr. Robert Screen in 1970, who built the tennis team into a national power. In his 43 years as head coach, the Pirates won two NCAA national championships while finishing second six times, four national black college championships and three state of Virginia championships, 27 conference crowns while winning 1,086 matches in Division I and II. Screen was one of the first to recruit international students. They were the catalysts to making the Hampton tennis program a national power. Screen also served as chairman of HU’s Department of Communicative Sciences and Disorders.
