David Banks

David Banks is entering his second season as an assistant coach with the Hampton University football program, where he will primarily work with the team’s running backs.

Banks’ first season with the Pirates was a success on the ground; not only did Hampton rank fifth in the MEAC with 148.1 rushing yards per game to go along with 15 touchdowns, but senior Jeremiah Schwartz became the first Pirate since 2009 to rush for 1,000 yards in a season. He led the MEAC with 115.9 rushing yards per game and was a First Team All-MEAC selection.

Pirate running backs averaged 3.9 yards per carry in 2012.

Prior to coming to Hampton, Banks coached the offensive and defensive lines for the European champion Calanda Broncos – a team on which he worked with former NFL, Canadian Football League, and NFL Europe players. He also has experience coaching college at the Division II, Division III, and Football Bowl Subdivision level.

Banks received his undergraduate degree in political science from Valdosta State in 1996. He spent three seasons on Valdosta State’s football team as a wide receiver, helping the team win the first playoff game in program history. He also earned a Master’s in communication studies from New Mexico State in 2010.

After serving as a graduate assistant and quality control coach at New Mexico State, Banks went to North Carolina Pembroke, where he served as running backs coach.

Prior to his stint at New Mexico State, Banks spent the 2007 season as the quarterbacks coach at La Verne. Despite capturing just one victory that season, the Leopards’ quarterbacks completed nearly 60 percent (225-for-387) of their passes and averaged better than 254 passing yards per contest. Banks spent the 2005 and 2006 campaigns in Marshall, Texas, at East Texas Baptist where he coached both the defensive line in his initial season, before taking on a dual role as both defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach in 2006.

Banks began his coaching career at Greenville (Ill.) College where he skippered both the offensive and defensive lines, but he has also spent time in the high school ranks as well at his alma mater, Norcross (Ga.) High School. In 2005, he attained his first professional coaching stint in Innsbruck, Austria, as a member of the Swarco Raiders coaching staff.

Banks is a native of Norcross, Ga.
