Michael Villagrana

Michael Villagrana is entering his fifth year with the Hampton University football program, and his third as special teams coordinator. He is in charge of overseeing all aspects of the Pirates’ special teams unit, and he is also now the program’s recruiting coordinator.

In addition to his on-field duties, Villagrana is also in charge of the team’s walk-ons.

Villagrana oversaw a Pirates special teams unit that led the MEAC in punting last season, thanks to Second Team All-MEAC selection Jordan Stovall. Hampton special teams also resulted in eight made field goals in 2012 (in 11 tries), and kicker Taurean Durham was a perfect 23-for-23 in PATs.

Hampton also led the MEAC in kickoff returns, averaging 24.9 yards per return, and third in the conference in kickoff coverage.

A five-year player on the West Virginia University football team, Villagrana won the Gridiron Award in 2008 while earning a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts and sciences. Villagrana then spent a year as a graduate assistant with the Mountaineers, while pursuing a Masters in athletic coaching education.

Villagrana was an offensive graduate assistant for the Pirates in 2009.

Villagrana is a native of Youngstown, Ohio.
