Keith Goganious

Keith Goganious enters his fourth season at Hampton University, and his third as defensive coordinator, serving under head coach Donovan Rose. Goganious brings with him a wealth of experience, thanks to years of playing Division I-A college football and in the National Football League.

He is responsible for developing the overall defensive scheme, as well as the linebackers. Goganious also assists with the team’s summer football camp and football coaches’ clinic, and he works as the program’s liaison to the NFL.

This past season, the Pirates again showed their defense mettle, finishing the season fourth in the MEAC in passing defense (183.9 yards per game), and senior defensive back Micah Pellerin was named First Team All-MEAC. The Pirates also led the MEAC in pass defense efficiency and ranked fourth in the conference in scoring defense.

In 2010, the Pirates finished No. 1 in the FCS national rankings in the red zone defense, No. 3 in total defense (271 yards per game) and No. 4 in pass defense (141 yards per game).

Goganious was instrumental in the development of All-MEAC selections Brandon Roundtree and Julio Sanchez in 2009.

A three-sport letterman at Green Run High School in Virginia Beach, Va., Goganious was an All-Beach District, All-Tidewater and All-State selection at linebacker his senior year. He also won the VHSL East Team MVP award at the 1987 All-State football game.

Goganious played his college ball at Penn State from 1987-91, while earning his bachelor of sciences in business management. From there, he went to the NFL, where he spent five seasons. He played for the Buffalo Bills (1992-95), Jacksonville Jaguars (1996) and Baltimore Ravens (1997).

After retiring from the NFL, Goganious got his start in coaching with the Hampton Roads Football camp. From there, Goganious became the head football coach at North Point (Md.) High School, where he served from 2006-08.

Goganious is a member of the Penn State Football Letterman’s Club, as well as NFL Alumni and NFLPA Retired Players. A native of Virginia Beach, Goganious enjoys playing golf, working out and watching movies; Goganious even co-hosts an annual celebrity golf tournament, in which the proceeds benefit Green Run High School.

He is married to Ingrid Goganious and they have one daughter, Lauren Noelle.
