Edward Joyner, Jr.

Edward Joyner is entering his second season as an assistant with the Hampton University basketball program.  His responsibilities include guard development, recruiting, game scouting, administrative duties, academic coordinator and community relations.

In Coach Joyner’s first season with the Pirates he helped develop 1st Team All Conference guard Rashad West the MEAC leading scorer last season (2006) and Mike Freeman the 2006 MEAC Rookie of the Year. As academic coordinator he guided the Hampton Men’s Basketball program to the highest GPA in the last 10 years.

Joyner joins the Pirates’ coaching staff after serving 11 years as the head assistant coach at Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) in Charlotte, where he also spent the last five of those years as the head women’s assistant.  While at JCSU he also served as the assistant to the Dean of Students over judiciary affairs.

In his time with the men’s team at Johnson C. Smith, Joyner was instrumental in the development of 13 first team all-conference performers and seven all-Americans, five of whom are currently playing professional basketball.  The Golden Bulls made seven appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament, reaching the Elite 8 in 2001 after they captured the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) championship.

On the women’s side he helped JCSU reach the conference championship game in three of his five seasons, while also making an NCAA Tournament appearance.  In addition, he coached six other players to all-conference honors.

Prior to beginning his coaching career, Joyner was a four-year letterman at JCSU, helping guide the Golden Bull to three divisional titles, two trips to the CIAA championship game and three appearances in the NCAA Division II Tournament.  During his time with the Golden Bulls Joyner was named Defensive Player of the Year twice and he finished his career among the top 10 assists leaders in JCSU history, earning him an appearance in the Black College All-Star Game.

Joyner is also the owner and co-coordinator of Scholars Inc., a non-profit organization in Charlotte that helps under privileged children.  They provide summer camps for at risk youth, group homes, and an academic and sport unit that has helped 25 students receive college scholarships for athletics and academics.

A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Joyner is the son of Edward, Sr., head coach at St. Paul’s College, and the nephew of Steve Joyner who is the head coach and Director of Athletics at JCSU.
