Regina Gibbons

Regina Gibbons is entering her second season with the Lady Pirates as the Head Coach.  Last year, Coach Gibbons led the Lady Pirates to a 31-18 record, 11-2 in the conference which placed them first in the Northern Division for the MEAC.

Coach Gibbons is no stranger to the Hampton University Lady Pirates a former player for the well respected late Tiny Laster Jr., later to become his graduate assistant and then finally an assistant coach.  Gibbons has a well-earned reputation as one of the most respected first base players in school history.  Since being at HU Gibbons has made an instant impact with the team as a motivator and a vocal leader.  During her tenure at HU she has had an opportunity to be a part of the production of some of the best first base players in the Mid Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) including 2001 MEAC Player of The Year – Sharri Mapp.

As a player, Gibbons was a successful first base player at HU.  She was a member of the highly touted and well-respected 1996 MEAC champion ship team.  Coming to HU as a walk-on, she earned a spot in the starting rotation in her sophomore campaign…followed with a full athletic scholarship.  In 1998, Gibbons led the team in home runs (6), drove in 23 runs and crossed the plate 25 times herself.  She also had a .315 batting average for the Lady Pirates.  She did all of this despite missing 14 games due to a fractured ankle.

Gibbons is a native of Bridgeton, New Jersey but now resides in the Tidewater area in Newport News.  She is now assuming dual roles as the Director, of Institutional Research and Head Softball Coach.  Gibbons graduated in 1998 with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Psychology, again in 2000 with a Master’s in Teaching and lastly in 2004 with a Master’s in Counseling with an emphasis in College Student  Development.

Coach Gibbons attributes her success in softball and life to her philosophy that “the only time you should look down on someone is when you are helping them up.”
