Walter Mebane

Mebane, a coach with a deep understanding of the game of basketball and an outstanding recruiter, is now in his ninth season with the Lady Pirates’ program overall after serving as both an assistant coach and associate head coach during his tenure at Hampton University.

Entering his fourth season head coach, Mebane brings a desire and passion to keep the program at the top of the conference, and always thinks first about his student-athletes on and off the court.  He knows that the student-athletes are what makes the team, and no one cares more about the young women that comprise the Hampton University Lady Pirates basketball team than Walter Mebane.  His strong devotion to the academic growth of his student-athletes is seen in his “fatherly” love for every player that has ever worn the royal blue and white colors on a Lady Pirates jersey.

Mebane’s first and foremost importance towards his players is expressing the importance of working hard towards building dedication, commitment and desire, in order to come out a winner on and off the playing court.  For so many years, the Lady Pirates have been geared towards bringing their defense up above the rest, but now defense will certainly be a major part of the game-plan while being committed to offense as well.

Mebane first arrived at HU in 1996, where he served as the Director of Basketball Operations for the men’s basketball program.  During the second half of the 1996-97 season, Mebane joined the women’s basketball team as an assistant coach. At the conclusion of the season, he returned to the men’s program, where he stayed until offered a position as assistant coach in 1998.

Prior to arriving at Hampton University, Mebane served as the Director of Athletics as well as basketball coach for boys’ varsity at Atlantic Shores High School in nearby Chesapeake, Virginia.

From 1987-94, Mebane coached at Pace Academy in Atlanta, Georgia.  While in Atlanta, he also served as Director of Multicultural Affairs.

Walter Mebane is a proud native of Durham, North Carolina.  He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Relations and Education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981.  In his spare time, Mebane enjoys attending the theater, playing golf and engaging in many other outdoor activities.  Away from the game of basketball, Mebane’s first love is his daughter, Carrie Alexis (13), who lives in Charlotte, North Carolina.
