A long-time Division I head coach with Hampton Roads ties, Ron Garner joins the track staff this year working with the women’s jumpers and hurdlers.
Garner joins the Pirates after two years at the helm of the University of Illinois where his runners made 20 additions to the all-time Top 10 lists. He had previously served as an assistant coach at Illinois in the mid 1990s.
His coaching history also includes stops at the University of South Carolina, James Madison, Virginia and Clemson. At South Carolina, he coached 20 All-Americans in 12 events. In Harrisonburg, every athlete he coached at JMU established at least one personal best in the throwing events. At Virginia he coached two 2004 US Olympic Trials qualifiers, one 2004 NCAA All-American and three ACC Champions.
Garner graduated from Christopher Newport University in 1982 and started coaching there in 1983.
