TIME RAN OUT FOR PIRATES IN 60-61 LOSS TO COPPIN STATE

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, Md. – With 2.8 seconds remaining in regulation, Coppin State guard Vince Goldsberry connected on a jumper that gave the Eagles a key 61-60 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference victory over the Pirates of Hampton University on Saturday in the Coppin Center on the campus of Coppin State University.

The Pirates took a 60-59 lead over the Eagles with 44 seconds remaining in regulation off two good free throws by sophomore guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.), who finished the night with five points and five assists.

Vincent Simpson (Philadelphia, Pa.), who led Hampton with 10 points, missed the front end of a key one-and-one free throw opportunity with 15 seconds to play and the Pirates holding on to a 60-59 lead.

Following two timeouts, the Eagles worked the ball to Mike Buckley, who missed a 3-point attempt. Lenny Young rebounded the miss for the Eagles, but his lay-up attempt was blocked by Pirates forward Theo Smalling (Tampa, Fla.), who finished the night with six points, five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. Smalling’s blocked shot directed into the hands of Goldsberry, who made the game-winner from the right elbow, which was his only shot of the night.
