Coastal Athletic Association (CAA)

Hampton University is a full member of the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA). The CAA Football Conference is an NCAA Division I FCS conference and members include: UAlbany, Bryant, Campbell, Elon, Hampton, Maine, Monmouth, New Hampshire, North Carolina A&T, Rhode Island, Sacred Heart, Stony Brook and Towson.
 
For all sports, CAA league membership includes: Campbell, Charleston, Drexel, Elon, Hampton, Hofstra, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T, UNCW, Northeastern, Stony Brook, Towson and William & Mary.
 
The CAA was founded in 1979 as the ECAC South Conference, made up of independent schools which played basketball in the Eastern College Athletic Conference South Region. During its first two seasons, its members continued to play basketball as independents during the regular season and take part in the ECAC's South Region tournament for independents, but it began conference play in basketball in the 1981-82 season.
 
It was renamed the Colonial Athletic Association in 1985 and is headquartered in Richmond, Va. Tom Yeager served as commissioner from 1979-2016 before retiring. He was replaced by current commissioner is Joe D'Antonio.
 
The conference was rebranded in July 2023 as the Coastal Athletic Association after the league expanded and added new members.
 
The CAA sponsors championships in 22 men’s and women’s sports championships including: men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, field hockey, volleyball, men’s indoor track & field, women’s indoor track & field, men’s swimming & diving, women’s swimming & diving, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, men’s golf, women’s golf, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse, men’s outdoor track & field, women’s outdoor track & field, women’s rowing, baseball and softball.
