HAMPTON FOOTBALL HIRES THREE NEW COACHES

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University football team, under the direction of head coach Donovan Rose, has announced the hiring of three new assistant coaches on the offensive side of the ball, including two coaches familiar with the Pirates.

Fred Kaiss returns to Hampton to serve as offensive coordinator, coming off his second stint with the program at Tennessee State. Kaiss was offensive coordinator for the Tigers for four years, while also coaching the wide receivers last season. Prior to his most recent stint with Tennessee State, Kaiss served as offensive coordinator for the Pirates for five seasons, 2001-06; Hampton had a top-25 offense all five years Kaiss was in charge.

Kaiss' first stint at Tennessee State came in 1997-99, when he served as special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach.

“It's great to have someone as knowledgeable as Fred coming in, especially considering how great he was when he was here before,” Rose said. “I didn't really want to start fresh, I wanted to go with someone I knew and someone who was familiar with the program; I wanted someone experienced, and I think he'll give us a better flow.”

Shannon Harris also comes to Hampton from Tennessee State, where he spent seven years on the Tigers' staff. He joined the coaching staff in 2003 as a student assistant, before serving as Tennessee State's wide receivers coach in 2006 and quarterbacks coach in 2009. Harris was a star quarterback for Tennessee State, setting a school record with 3,137 yards of offense in 2001.

“Shannon operated under the same system as Kaiss, and that was important to me,” Rose said. “He's familiar with what Kaiss likes to do, he likes to spread the field, and I wanted an offensive staff that would be comfortable from the beginning.

“I think Shannon and Kaiss give us that.”

Charles Huff also returns to Hampton as the offensive line coach, coming off a one-year internship with the football program at the University of Maryland. Prior to that internship, Huff was on the Tennessee State staff for three seasons, serving in a variety of capacities.

Prior to going to Tennessee State, Huff was a graduate assistant at Hampton. Huff was a part of the Pirates when they went undefeated in 2005, and played for three MEA C champion squads. Toward the end of his playing career, Huff was an offensive guard, full back and tight end.

“I knew Charles as a player,” Rose said, “and he was a very intelligent guy, and he's kept that throughout his coaching career.”
