WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Bernadette Fortune and Ashlee Finley each poured in 18 points Monday night as the Hampton University Women's Basketball team won their fourth straight game, a 65-48 road decision over the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State.
A 42.4 percent shooting clip (14-for-33) in the first half allowed Hampton to head into the locker room at halftime with a 34-24 lead.
Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit six of her 13 shots on the night, including 2-for-3 from 3-point range and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. She also had a team-high three assists in 26 minutes played.
Finley (Harrisburg, Pa.) led the Lady Pirates in rebounding as well, pulling down nine boards on the night. She was 7-for-10 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free throw line.
Deanna Payne added eight rebounds for Hampton, while senior Chinyere Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va.) pulled down seven.
The Lady Pirates shot 39.7 percent, making 25-of-63 shots taken on the night. The Lady Rams made just 17-of-52 shots, shooting 32.7 percent while turning the ball over 17 times. Winston-Salem State did not hit a 3-pointer in the game, going 0-for-14 from distance.
Hampton outrebounded Winston-Salem State 48-30.
The Lady Pirates return home for their next contest, a Saturday evening affair against Coppin State. Tip-off will be at 4 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
