LADY PIRATES SOFTBALL DROPS DOUBLEHEADER AT CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Christopher Newport on Thursday at Captains Park, losing the first game 7-5 before falling 9-1 in the nightcap.

Hampton (2-4) held a 2-1 lead in the first game after two and a half innings, thanks to an RBI single from Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) and another from Kelsi Saunders (Suffolk, Va.). But CNU answered with four runs in the bottom of the third inning, taking advantage of five hits and one error.

The Lady Pirates pulled within one in the next inning, thanks in part to an RBI double from Ashley Weissenbach (Moreno Valley, Calif.), but again, the Captains answered in the bottom of the inning. Megan Morris hit a solo home run for the Captains, while Taylor Morgan singled home another run.

Weissenback singled home Evelyn Garcia (Poquoson, Va.) for Hampton's fifth run of the game, but the Lady Pirates never got any closer.

Amanda Black (Hamilton, Ontario) lost her second game of the season, going six innings and giving up 13 hits and seven runs. She struck out three and walked two.

Weissenbach went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game, driving home a pair of runs.

CNU held a 2-0 lead after three and a half innings in the second game, but the Captains scored five times in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the first game open. Lauren Rowley doubled home a run for the Captains, while Morris also doubled in the inning, bringing home a pair of runs.

Saunders got the Lady Pirates on the board in the top of the fifth inning with a solo home run to center field, but CNU plated two more in the bottom of the inning to push the game to its final margin.

Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) started on the mound for the Lady Pirates, going 4.1 innings and giving up eight hits and nine runs in the loss. She walked three and struck out one, while also hitting three batters.

Saunders had three of the Lady Pirates' six hits in the game.

The Lady Pirates will return to action at the 2009 Fastpitch Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. Feb. 27-March 1. The Lady Pirates will take on Coppin State on Feb. 27 at noon.
