HAMPTON, Va. – For the first time since March 2002, the Hampton University track & field teams will host the historic Hampton Relays this Saturday at the newly-renovated track complex at Armstrong Stadium on the campus of Hampton University.
Field and running events will begin at 11 a.m. Hampton will be joined by MEAC foes Maryland-Eastern Shore, Delaware State, Morgan State, Norfolk State and Coppin State. Admission will be $5.
UPDATE: Virginia Wesleyan College and University of D.C. will also have athletes competing on Saturday. Olympic gold medalist LaShawn Merritt, a native of Suffolk, Va., will also be at the Hampton Relays as a guest competitor.
“You have to look at the history, the uniqueness of it,” said first-year Pirates head coach Steven Lewis. “It's also an opportunity for the historically black colleges to showcase their talents in track & field. Students on-campus will also have the opportunity to see their national-caliber track teams in action.”
Brandon Jones (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a hand in the Pirates winning three event titles this past weekend at the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg. He won the 400-meter dash in 48.13, before helping the 4x100-meter and 4x200-meter relay teams win titles on Saturday. The Pirates won the 4x100-meter relay in 41.42, while the 4x200-meter relay team, anchored by Jones, won with a time of 1:26.55.
Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.), who was also on those relay teams, turned in a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles after running a 14.36, a time which qualified him for the IC4A meet.
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) gave the Lady Pirates their best finish at the Colonial Relays, finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.73. That time qualified Vassell for the NCAA Regional Championships and the ECAC Outdoor Championships.
This will be the second track meet the Pirates have hosted this year; in January, the school held the inaugural Hampton University Invitational at the Boo Williams Sportsplex, the first indoor meet the school has ever hosted.
“We're excited to bringing back (the Hampton Relays),” women's head coach
Maurice Pierce said. “It's always been important to give the local community a chance to see Hampton track in action.”
