SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. –
Darrion Pellum, Kwame Morgan and
Charles Funches combined for 68 of the Pirates' 78 points as they rolled past the Penguins of Div. II Dominican (Calif.) University in the second game of the 2010 Hilltop Classic at War Memorial Gymnasium on Wednesday.
The Pirates improved to 10-2 on the season with their third straight win, while the Penguins dropped to 0-8 on the season.
Pellum (Hampton, Va.) scored a career-high 34 points on 11-for-20 shooting, going 9-for-13 from 3-point range, while Funches (Jersey City, N.J.), the reigning MEAC Player of the Week, added 14 points and a team-high 16 rebounds for his third double-double of the season. Morgan (Largo, Md.) added 20 points on 7-for-14 shooting.
Dominican clawed back to within two with 5:08 to play, when Mark Lewis hit a 3-pointer to cut Hampton's lead to 61-59. But junior forward
Danny Agbelese hit a jumper on the ensuing possession to make it a two-possession game, and the Pirates closed out the game on a 17-6 run.
The Pirates shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the floor, making 10 of their 25 3-pointers. Hampton also out-rebounded Dominican 38-29, and the Pirates scored 13 points off of 20 Dominican turnovers.
The Penguins shot 44.3 percent (27-for-61) from the floor. Leon Hart led Dominican with 17 points, while Killian Larson added 16 points and a team-high six rebounds.
Hampton opened the game on an 8-0 run. The Penguins did take a 19-18 lead with 7:47 left in the first half on a Adam Chavis jumper, but Funches sank two free throws at the 6:53 mark to give the lead back to Hampton.
The Pirates closed the first half on a 19-5 run to take a 37-24 lead at intermission.
Pellum went 5-of-7 from beyond the three point arc in the first half, as he led both teams in scoring with 17 points. Morgan added 12 points of his own to give the Pirates a 37-24 lead of Dominican at the half.
The Pirates made 13-of-26 shots, an impressive 50 percent from the floor, while holding the Penguins to 40 percent on 10-of-25 shooting. Killian Larson led Dominican in scoring with eight points in the first half.
