LANDOVER, Md. – The Hampton University women's track & field team finished second in the team standings of the Terrapin Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland on Saturday at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex.
The Lady Pirates finished with 110 points, while Maryland won the team title with 140.5. Johns Hopkins finished a distant third in the team standings with 49.5 points.
Senior
Racquel Vassell (Irvington, N.J.), a three-time MEAC Athlete of the Week, had another strong showing, with a pair of event titles and two other top-five finishes. She won the 200-meter dash with a 24.69, before she helped freshman
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.), freshman
Emmy Fraenk and junior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) win the 4x400-meter relay with a 3:50.32.
Vassell also finished third in the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.42 and ran a season-best 7.60 in the 60-meter dash to finish fourth.
Robinson won her second event title of the season, taking the 800-meter run with a 2:14.47.
The Lady Pirates actually swept the top two spots in the 4x400-meter relay, as senior
Margaret Harris (South Bend, Ind.), freshman
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.), junior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore
Shaquanda Gainey (Camden, N.J.) ran a 3:53.27 to come in second.
Calder also finished second in the high jump with a mark of 1.73 meters, while
Teiara Denmark jumped 11.64 meters in the triple jump to come in second. Denmark also came in fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.51 meters.
Senior
Kristal McGreggor (Bronx, N.Y.) finished fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 15.51 meters.
Though the men's track & field team had the weekend off, a few of the Pirates' distance runners made the trip to Landover, Md. Sophomore
Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned in the best finish after running a 1:21.96 in the 600-meter run to finish third.
Freshman Quintin Fulgham jumped 6.78 meters in the long jump to come in fifth, while sophomore
Michael Davenport (Pleasantville, N.J.) ran a 2:37.79 to finish seventh in the 1,000-meter run.
The Pirates wound up tied for 13th with Fairleigh Dickinson and Virginia State in the men's team standings with 17 points. Maryland Baltimore County won the men's team title with 105 points. Host Maryland came in second with 99 points.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they head to State College, Pa. to compete in the Penn State National.
