CHICAGO – Hampton University freshman
Giuditta Di Laghi finished 12th in the ICSA Women's Singlehanded national Championships, which were held at the Chicago Yacht Club on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and hosted by Northwestern University.
Di Laghi (Albenga, Italy), the first Hampton sailor ever to compete for a national championship, finished with 147 points. Anne Haeger of Boston College won the title with 34 points.
Di Laghi's best result came in the last race on Sunday, when she finished sixth. Winds were brisk throughout the weekend, reaching 30 knots on Sunday alone.
Meanwhile, the Pirates were in Charleston, S.C. to compete in the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional on Saturday and Sunday, hosted by the College of Charleston. Hampton finished 14th overall with 291 points, while the host Cougars swept the top two spots.
Sophomore
Simon Kimannee (St. Georges, Grenada) and freshman
Albert Toledo (Istanbul, Turkey) raced in the A Division, totaling 124 points and recording a best finish of third, while senior
Hykeem Gaddis (Las Vegas, Nev.) and junior
Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) raced in the B Division, recording 167 points.
